Everywhere I have lived in the world, I have always seen orchids. I have a good friend in San Francisco with a huge collection, and every week she attends to her orchids for hours. Orchids are common in flower shops due to their beauty. But nothing compares to what I have seen on Kauai where orchids thrive outside with almost no care. And, like anywhere else, many people around the island have great collections, often in their front yard for anyone passing by to admire.
I am really lucky to have a few growing in our yard, and especially the one growing attached to the trunk of our tangerine tree right outside the Tropical Suite.
We also have the Garden Island Orchid Society with advice on the growing and care of orchids.
I spent a long time during the Kauai County Fair admiring the collection the Society had on display.
